    Lamu Island

Lamu Island is a part of Lamu Archipelago, and has managed to stay unspoiled and untouched by the mass tourism and development that has hit much of Kenya’s coastline. Lamu is a place like no other, a peaceful tropical Island where life is lived at its own relaxed rhythm, it is a beautiful place of rolling dunes and endless beaches and a mysterious fascinating history that resembles its winding streets. The Island has a long history. It is one of the oldest and best preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa. Lamu Island town is built in coral stone and Mangrove timber. The town is characterized by the simplicity of structural forms enriched by such features as inner courtyards, verandas and elaborately carved wooden doors. Lamu’s narrow streets remain un changed, and in the markets and squares around the fort life moves at the same pace as it always has. For the traveler, Lamu is a hypnotically exotic experience, made even more enjoyable by the relaxed and welcoming attitudes of the locals. It’s an utter joy to tour narrow streets during your Lamu vacations. The Lamu Island is a place where time has stood still. Here you can do anything just relax and read a book, listen to the birds, go for a stroll along the beach. The Island has no vehicles so donkeys, bicycles and dhows remain the dominant part of transport. You can take a dhow trip to the Takwa ruins, a place worth visiting for few hours- former home to the people of Shela village. You could even snorkel on the coral reefs of Manda Toto Island or windsurf, kite surf, bodysurf, sail and water ski in Lamu Island. Kayaking trips into the Mangroves are also possible.

A 45km-walk from the town brings you to the sleepy village of Shela. This is where the beach begins and the complexities of life ends. To sail the archipelago is to discover, beautiful beaches, glorious seascapes, ancient ruins, fishing and scuba refuges. There are some cultural pursuits that you won’t want to miss out. The first recommended cultural spot for those on Lamu vacations is the Lamu museum; it is jam-packed with interesting cultural and historical exhibits and pieces. In the centre of the town stands a fort. Built for Omani invaders around 1812 it later became a prison, and is now a cultural center operated through the museum. Shela not only has the best beaches in the area but also some very interesting mosques that date back to the 1800s. The Shiathna-Asheri mosque is the most renowned of the Shela village mosques. Lamu Africa will not disappoint you, and much like the other top Kenyan coastal destinations, it’s pretty easy to spend more time here than you may have originally planned. Also, Kenya is famous for its beaches and affordability. One can find flights to Kenya, Nairobi in very cheap fares as Nairobi also provides a connecting airport for flights to certain other landlocked countries of Africa and neigh borers of Kenya.
